如何进行对自杀的一般性报道
在报道自杀事件时尤应注意如下几点:
●统计数据准确无误;
●信息来源真实可信;
●即使时间紧迫，报道也需慎重处理;
●慎重使用自杀行为的概括语言，
例如“自杀流行病”或“全球自杀率最高的区域”等词汇应避免使用;
●避免用自杀行为是社会文化发展的必然副产品的错误概念诱导读者。
如何对特殊自杀案例进行报道
应牢记如下几点:
尽量避免对自杀作感性报道，尤其事关名人时，更应避免渲染夸大之词。如该公众人物生前曾患有精神疾病，应在文章中明确指出，并避免绘声绘色地详细描述自杀方法、事件现场的惨状或刊登死者照片。媒体应避免用头条新闻报道自杀案例。
●媒体报道时应避免对自杀方法的详细描述。研究表明:对自杀方法的描述越详细，对大众的负面影响越大。某些自杀地点，如:桥梁、山峰、建筑工地及火车轨道等被媒体曝光后，轻生者到该地赴死的几率明显增高。
●媒体报道时切忌把自杀行为描写成扑朔迷离，引人入胜的悬案，但也不能过于简单地归结于某一件事引发的悲剧。自杀行为通常是许多负面事件堆积的结果，如:精神和心理疾病、滥用药物及药物成瘾、家庭变故、内心矛盾和心理压力太大等。明确自杀的诱发因果有利于保护公众的心理健康。
●切忌在报道中暗示自杀是人们面对重大人生困惑:如破产、考试失败或被性虐待的等唯一解脱方法。
●在报道时应提到自杀者的行为对其亲属和心理方面的伤害。
●将死者称为烈士会导致心灵脆弱者误认为社会崇尚自杀行为而盲目效仿。应在悼念死者、寄托哀思处大着笔墨。
●客观描述自杀未遂者的健康状况亦可将防止盲目模仿自杀行为。提供自杀相关信息的救助机构应在报道自杀案例的同时播放相关救助机构的信息，媒体可以借此充当协助公众防止自杀的积极角色:
●列出相关精神健康机构的最新电话号码及地址;
●广为宣传自杀行为前的征兆;
●宣传抑郁与自杀密切相关，以及抑郁症是可治之症;
●对自杀者的遗属表示同情并给予专业救助机构的电话号码，以减少其自杀危险性。
